Book Review:Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Yes its time to take a trip down platform  9 3/4 again. So hold on your sorting hats as we enter the magical realm of Harry Potter. Harry this time is no teenager. After years of fighting the Dark Lord and winning convincingly you would think that Harry's battles are over. You would be very much mistaken. The story here takes off right from where Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended. Nineteen years after the battle of Hogwarts Harry Potter is an overburdened Head of Magical Law and Enforcement. He is a father of three children and a hands-on husband.

The premise of the play is primarily about Harry Potter and his relations with his son Albus Severus.Yes the boy is named after two of Hogwarts previous headmasters. At the beginning of the story little Albus Potter is worried that he will be sorted into Slytherin and not Gryffindor. His worst fears come true and he is sorted into Slytherin.

Harry struggles to understand his son are quite apparent. The characters play out beautifully once the plot is laid bare. Several characters from the Harry Potter universe make appearances as we proceed through the story line. This includes Ron ,Hermione, Ginny and of course Draco Malfoy. Ron is as affable and clumsy as ever. Hermione as brilliant as she ever was rising through the ranks to the top of the wizarding hierarchy(No surprises there). Minerva Mcgonagall is the sharpest person in all of Hogwarts. I simply loved the character in the Harry Potter series and was very glad that it made it through.Talking portraits and moving staircases all make their appearances. One of the most poignant moments in the book is the when the portrait of Albus Dumbledore talks with Harry Potter.
I thoroughly enjoyed Draco Malfoy's transformation from a spoiled brat to that of a concerned father.
As in the Harry Potter series the crux of the story lies in friendship.True to Harry Potter tradition friendship can overcome great odds as demonstrated in the Cursed Child. Albus Potter, the son of Harry Potter, and Scorpius Malfoy ,the son of Draco Malfoy, form unlikeliest of pair of friends.Together they set out to correct the perceived wrongs of the past.

The action is set in motion when the ministry comes across a Time Turner. Past, present and future then coalesce to form a roller coaster ride.

We are also allowed a glimpse into a dystopian future where Lord Voldemort has triumphed and Harry Potter is dead. The imagination is vivid and the characters play along brilliantly. The denouement is perfectly blended with large douses of emotional drama.

There is enough for everyone. Fans would be particularly pleased. A word of caution though "Harry Potter And the Cursed Child" by Jack Thorne and John Tiffany along with J.K. Rowling do conjure a wonderful script but it is a script nevertheless and not a full length novel. Otherwise the book is well worth it.
